Microsoft’s Surface Book, a full-size 2-in-1 tablet/notebook packing some serious graphics muscle. Microsoft claims it is 2x more powerful than MacBook Pro and crushes the iPad Pro.
October 6th 2015, Microsoft launched the Surface Book, the first Laptop ever built by Microsoft. Microsoft claims that the combined power of the i7 processor and nvidia GPU make the Surface Book 2x faster than the current Apple MacBook Pro laptop. The laptop’s screen is detachable allowing the device to operate as a 13.5″ tablet. Battery life is advertised to be 12 hours.
The 2-in-1 laptop/tablet features the 6th generation Intel Skylake processor and a dedicated Nvidia graphics processor. The Surface Book is available in 5 configurations priced from $1,499 – $2,699 USD. Make sure you choose a configuration carefully as memory and storage are not upgradeable!
When detached, Microsoft is calling the tablet a Clipboard since the device’s dimensions are that of an A4 piece of paper (8.67″ x 12.30″). Since all external USB ports remain on the bottom chassis the Clipboard is an impressive 7.7mm thin. The clipboard weighs in at 1.6lbs (728g) while the entire unit is around 3.34lbs (1,515g).
The Surface Book’s 6MP (3000×2000) multi-touch display measures 13.5″ diagonally with a pixel density of 267 PPI. Microsoft has not release specs on the screen’s brightness but it should be similar to the Surface Pro 3’s 371cd/m2 (nits) brightness.
What Nvidia GPU powers the Surface Book?
While Microsoft did not come out and say which Nvidia graphics processor powered the Surface Book, it did reveal that it uses GDDR5 memory. Nvidia also provided a few hints on it blog today, stating that the Surface Book contains a Maxwell-architecture GeForce powered GPU. Those two facts narrow down the possibilities to either a GeForce GTX 965M, 970M, or 980M. Two less likely possibilities are the first gen GTX 950M or GTX 960M notebook GPUs. The Surface Book’s GPU turns out to be a custom sized version of the slower 940M GPU [source].

Conclusion
Microsoft has built an all-around solid laptop that will compete with Apple’s MacBook Pro and Dell’s Precision Laptops. It will be interesting to see if the Surface Book will catch Dell off-guard or will Dell release a competing product later this month at Dell World. Apple’s answer may come in early spring 2016 with a touchscreen MacBook Pro featuring the 6th Gen Intel Processor.
